Williams History

I have two separate Williams' lines. One paternal, one maternal. This is from my paternal side. There is some question about the Cromwell connection. This history was given to me by my grandfather who received it from a cousin in the 1980s or early'90s.

Williams Family History

Williams comes from the Welsh word “Gwylyn" which means “Sentinel.” Sir Oliver (or Thomas) Cromwell was a Williams, and changed his name to Cromwell at the request of King Henry VI11. To Morgan Williams of Glamorganshire Wales, a royal balliff of King Henry VII (1485-1509) we owe our surname. Sir Richard Williams was requested to take the name of Cromwell at the request of King Henry VIII. He was a member of Parliment in 1542. Oliver Cromwell, whose real name was Oliver Williams, was the son of Robert of Lancaster. He assumed the name of Cromwell to please a parental uncle. Down through the reign of James I, the family styled themselves “Cromwell, alias Williams. Surnames were not used in Wales until around the mid l500's, William and his son would be Williams or Williamson. We have a book compiled over manv vears by various people. the last entries are in the 1960's. Every thing recorded here comes from this record, and is the results of research and many hours spent by the authors.

Source - Captain Isaac Williams and his Grandchildren. Part 1 Quaker Beginnings - 1717: 6 mo. 25 day. Richard Williams and Margaret Eaton, a widow published their second declaration of intention to wed. Their marriage was reported properly conducted, 7th month 24th day. It has been claimed that they were married 7th day, 10th month. That Margaret was a daughter of Humphrey Eaton, that Richard was an immigrant of 1705. If Margaret was a widow, her maiden name would not have been Eaton. Humphrey may have been the late husband, or even his father. If the above minutes are correct, the marriage might have taken place the 10th of the 7th month, or July 10, 1717.

Isaac Williams Sr. was a great pioneer. Born near Philadelphia. as a child he traveled down the Valley of Virginia to Loudoun County. where he grew up. As a young man he moved again with his family to Orange County. North Carolina. He lived there in all the pre-Revolutionary strife of the Regulation. Three Williams’s were disowned for participation (maybe the Revolutionary War) but young Isaac maintained his good Quaker standing.
At Cane Creek he married Rachel Pike. and in 1772 they moved to Deep Creek on the frontier of Guifford County NC. and three years later to Surry County NC. in the far West. After Rachel's death in 1789. he moved to the Quaker settlement at Lost Creek in Jefferson County in Eastern Tennessee. He was an original member of the Meeting at Deep River in 1778. Westfield in 1786 and Lost Creek 1797.
A Staunch Friend. Isaac raised sixteen Sons and Daughters in the way of truth. Most of them left the fold. or was disowned for irregular conduct or marriage. Three Daughters by Hannah Beals disgraced him by running away to Methodism. Little has been learned of his descendants other than the families of Captain Isaac and Rachel (Adamson) who moved to Indiana in 1817.
Rachel Pike died the same day her twins were born 8-5-1789. at the time of her death Isaac was 10 and Rachel was 13
Hannah Beals took her certificate to Lick Creek Meeting in Indiana in 1828. and doubfless spent her last days in Lawrence County.
Source - Harry Williams - Williams Indiana: Grandfather Isaac Williams Came from French Broad River Tennessee when Garrett Williams was about 13 years old in 1816 or 1817 and crossed White River (the White River runs east and west across Lawrence County, Indiana, and empties into the Wabash River at the Indiana-Illinois border) at Stump Hole Bridge. Only about ten acres near the ford (crossing) at Stump Hole had been cleared at that time on the north side of the river. In 1924 Herschel Bowman raised a good average crop of corn on this ground. Captain Isaac Williams drafted a Company of East Tennessee Militia in 1814, to help fight the so called second war with Great Britain, he also fought in the Creek Indian War and was known as an Indian fighter. Amel and Roxie Williams, along with their son Larry and family still live on a portion of the original acreage of Isaac Williams. The source of most of this information was given to me in about 1984 by them. They drove to Redfield and gave a copy to Uncle Albert Williams and myself. Amel is a direct descendant of Ham Williams. who researched most of the family history in later years.

Source - Captian Isaac Part 2 - He was the son of Isaac Williams Sr. and Rachel Pike. He was born in Surry Co. NC on 3-17-1779 and died 2-13-1856, in Lawrence Co. Indiana
He married first. Amelia, daughter of Garrett Gibson on 5-1-1801, she was born in Surry County NC. 6-6-l786 and died 7-2-1841 in Lawrence County. Indiana. Tradition says the wedding took place at Asheville NC. As Amelia was not yet fifteen, it appears that this may have been a run away marriage, without Church sanction. At any rate Isaac was disowned immediately thereafter. Both Isaac and Amelia are buried at Old Union In Lawrence County.
Isaac Sr. married 2nd on 4-14-1844 to Lucy Dye, she was born 7-4-1801, and died 8-24-1844. Brurial at Ferguson Cemetery.
Isaac Sr. married 3rd on 5-31-1846 to Rebecca D. Dobelin, born 12-23-1797, died 3-23-1857, buried at Old Union

The first eight children were born in East Tennessee. Laban in Jefferson Country, the others in Sevier Couny. Andrew Jackson was born during the War of 1812, and bore the General's name. Laban died soon after the end of the War. Isaac and Amelia took seven children to Indiana and five more where born there.
Isaac was disowed shortly after his marriage to 14 year old Amelia, whether for marrying out of unity we know not. He did not seek reinstatement or condemn his conduct for attending musters..

Source Albert Williams - All of the children of Clay Dixon Williams where not given middle names, they where told they could pick their own it they wanted one. Alva picked Kenneth, because he did not like the name Alva, no one ever called as I know no one else in the family had a middle name.
Source Albert Williams - Tells the story of Alva Williams when he was 14 years old, he and a mixed race friend of his by the name of Frank Crook where standing by the railroad tracks one day when a train was going by. Frank said why don't we take a ride, so they hopped the train (the rods I imagine which was the way to travel in those days with Out any money). Alva didn’t come home and Grandmother Jane was very worried, she tried to get Grandpa Clay to go look for him, but he told her not to worry he would come home when he got hungry. Grandmother Jane never turned down anyone who came to her door asking for help or food. 3 years later came a knock to her door, and there stood a grown man, who said he was hungry could she spare something to eat. She recognized Alva, and welcomed him home with open arms. He had spent the years traveling with a circus in the South, working odd jobs all over, the railroad as a fireman, and on the largest farm in the world at the time in Danville Il. Uncle Albert said when they went by there on the way too Dakota he counted 58 Gang Plows pulled by Mules working on that farm.
In 1914 Alva followed the harvest into South Dakota, liked the area, and found permanent employment with Harrv Barz who farmed south of Mellette, SD. In 1917 he returned to Indiana to join the Army, and served in France. He returned to Indiana alter his discharge in 1919, and said he was going back to South Dakota (by Walter - He told me he had his first good breath of fresh air when came into the State, and promised himself to go back) He talked his brother Eph and his Sister Ruby into going along with him. Alva and Ruby worked for Harry Barz, and Eph worked for Henry Hilkemeier, and later for Mart Muxen. That fall they wrote home, trying to persuade the rest of the family to come to Dakota. Grandmother Jane would not leave, because of her mother. Grandpa Clay had been operating a General Store in Mt Olive. and it was not a successful adventure, he also farmed.
Albert said he worked at a Saw Mill for $1.00 a day hauling sawdust with a wheel borrow up and over a big mound of sawdust during that time. Jane's Mother passed away. and she wrote and said they where getting ready to come out. Grandpa had his crop in, and they had to wait for that. The South Dakota people said they where always short of food so Grandmother Jane, Celia and Albert picked and canned vegetables and fruit all summer to use that winter.
They sold all of their farm equipment and livestock at a sale on 104-1920. Loaded everything else they owned on a railroad car and arrived in Frarkfort SD on 10-7-1920. It cost them $311.00 for the Railroad car. and $38.00 apiece for the Tickets. Alva and Eph had already rented a farm, and had bought equipment etc. Albert says they put him in debt at 15 years of age, and he did not get out of debt until 1942.1 think he did remarkably well, most people never get out of debt.
Grandmother Jane had an old Uncle come with them to Dakota, by the name of William Blake. He was born-2-25-1856 in Kentucky and died 8-28-1931, and is buried at Frankfort SD beside Jane and Clay.
Source - Walter Williams - My Father Alva told me a story about Uncle Bill Blake, it seems he had a good sum of money in a Bank in Indiana in the late 1800's, and during one of the bank crash's of that period, the Bank went broke, and so did Uncle Bill's money. From that day he never trusted banks, and always kept his money hid away at home. The family was alway's after him about putting his money in the Bank, because it would be safer there. in case of a fire etc. They assured him that there wasn”t any danger of Banks closing everything was so much better now, and they eventually convinced him thwy wer safe, and he deposited about $5000.00 in the Bank in Frankfort SD. Every time someone went to town Iwhich wasn”t often Uncle Bill would go along, draw his money out of the bank, cout it, re-deposit it,and go home satisfied ot was still there. It turned out Uncle Bill was right, he should have kept his moneh at home were it was safe. The Bank in Frankfort went broke during the big Bank Carsh in the 1930’s. Uncle Bill lost all his money, as well as everybody else who had money in the Bank. My father said he (Uncle Bill) never knew he had lost it, as he was very ill atthe time, and passed away in 1931.
